    Thanks to everyone for the recommendations, here’s the list, my comments are in italics (Oh and I’m going to try read them all, if I haven’t already):

    nicklas : Iain Banks’ “Espadair Street” or Tim Powers’ “Declare”. (Read Espadir street, great book)

    fancyprosestyle : Fluke, or I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore, or Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (My first Neal Stephenson, now there’s an idea)

    insertname : pick something by David Brin or Iain M Banks. both are excellent authors. (Iain [M] banks is excellent, I agree)

    nosmo : Not my favourite book, but I would recommend some JG Ballard- he has the same nightmarish aesthetic and social critique without much futurism (He did Empire of the Sun right? Loved that)

    Stewart Curry (@irishstu) : Hurray! Comments! If you loved Neuromancer then check out Iain M Banks - Use of Weapons and The Player of Games are a good start. (Another Banks fan! I’ve read a few of his non -sci-fi stuff, The Crow Road jumps to mind as a favourite)

    emily-jane : the time travellers wife - audrey niffenegger - dont be put off my the film trailers, it’s a mind bender. (Em, you’re the glamest nerd I know :D)
