Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Carol Burnett and more gush about Betty White at 100

Betty White once said in the character of Rose Nylund, “The older you get, the better you get … unless you’re a banana.” First of all, LMFAO. Secondly, truuuuuuue. The TV legend from such classics as The Golden Girls, Hot in Cleveland, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, who is about to turn 100 in January, is definitely no browning banana, as she dishes on what keeps her feeling young and vibrant.

“I try to avoid anything green. I think it’s working,” the platinum-haired icon jokes in the new People Magazine cover story out this week.

Saying she was “born a cockeyed optimist,” Betty credits her positivity to her longevity. “I got it from my mom, and that never changed,” she says. “I always find the positive.”

“I’m so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age. It’s amazing.”

Her famous co-stars and friends also find her amazing. The Proposal co-stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds tell the outlet that Betty’s comedic timing is always on-point, even to this day.

“Timing isn’t easy in comedy, because you have to navigate other people’s timing. Betty pivots like I have never seen, making it look seamless,” Sandra told the outlet. “The rest of us just remain silent and pray we’re not cut out of the scene.”

Sandra closes out her birthday wishes to Betty with the hope she’ll enjoy her special day, “the same way she has celebrated every day of her life with humour, kindness and a vodka on ice, toasting to the fact that she’s a badass who has left us all in the dust.” We’ll cheers to that.

Canadian funnyman Ryan Reynolds, who may or may not have named his daughter after Betty, also told People that he’s been a Betty-stan “for as long as I can remember.” “I heard that scripts for Golden Girls were only 35 pages, which makes sense because so many of the laughs come from Betty simply looking at her castmates,” he adds.

Legendary comedienne Carol Burnett agrees, saying that every time Betty guest-starred on The Carol Burnett Show, she’d find the joke and push the envelope every time. “If there was a tinge of risqué humour in one of our sketches, she’d roll with it and make it even funnier and add a little wink to show that she was thinking of something sexy,” Carol says. “She’s not a stand-up. She’s not a jokester. It’s the way she can twist a line to get a laugh.”

Actress Mary Steenburgen and her husband, Cheers legend Ted Danson, also gushed about Betty, with Steenburgen praising Betty for throwing “her little F-bombs around and does it with this beautifully dimpled smile.”

As every centenarian does. #Goals

Danson added, “It’s not like she’s just a bubbly, joyful person. She wakes up every day and chooses to be that way. I think she leads a very purposeful life.”

Betty reveals to the outlet how she enjoys her twilight years these days, citing crossword puzzles and card games as a favourite for her Los Angeles life. She also likes to watch animal documentaries, Jeopardy! (what does she think of the guest hosts? We need answers), and the golf tournaments. She is also a longtime supporter of the Wildlife Learning Center, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Actors and Others for Animals.

Because, as Rose Nylund once said, “Don’t forget, dogs are people too!”

Betty’s milestone birthday falls on January 17, 2022, and she’s throwing a big movie bash called Betty White: 100 Years Young – a birthday celebration, which will open in 900 cinemas in the USA (Canada TBD because of the pandemic) and the famous friends stopping by to celebrate her special day include Ryan Reynolds, Tina Fey, Robert Redford, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Jay Leno, Carol Burnett, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel, Valerie Bertinelli, James Corden, Wendy Malick, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
