Tom Holland on speculation he’ll host the Oscars and if Spider-Man can win Best Picture – swiftheadline

Tom Holland has opened up about the chance of him hosting the Oscars – while also sharing his thoughts on his current Spider-Man blockbuster movie being nominated for one of the prestigious awards.

The 25-year-old actor has been playing high-school student Peter Parker – who is the man under the Spider-Man mask – since 2016.

This month, the star’s third Spider-Man film, titled No Way Home, was released in cinemas and has already banked over 1 billion US dollars as fans have clamoured to watch the film amid the ongoing Covid pandemic.

With the film making history as distributing company Sony’s biggest movie of all time and whispers are afoot that the film could be up for a Best Picture award at the 2021 Academy Awards – while Tom himself has been tipped to host the star studded awards.

The Hollywood Reporter asked Tom about the suggestion of him helming the awards – but he had bad news for anyone hoping he would say yes to hosting the event in the immediate future.

He replied: “Maybe in the future, but in all honesty I’m just too busy right now. I don’t have the time.

“I’ve got an Uncharted press tour to do, and then I start shooting in early March for this TV show [Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room] which is going to take up a lot of my time and is definitely the hardest role I’ve ever taken on.

“So maybe one day in the future. But no, not right now.”

He insisted: “Honestly, I just don’t have the time. And you know I would love to do that — I love that kind of thing, I love being put under pressure and doing things that I feel uncomfortable doing. So I’m interested in it, but I just don’t have the time.”

There has been speculation that Tom alongside Spider-Man co-star and girlfriend Zendaya could host the glitzy awards – with fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also teaming up for the event.

Meanwhile, Sony are said to be pushing ahead to try and land an Oscar for the film – despite the Academy routinely ignoring superhero films for their main awards.

Addressing speculation the film could scoop a golden statue, Tom said: “I’ve made Marvel movies and I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars.

“The only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other. But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters – it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they are real art.”

The success of No Way Home has been made all the more impressive due to the fact the film made $1 billion within two weeks of release amid the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Fears and panic over the Omicron variant has seen restaurants, pubs and streets emptied in recent weeks – but it seems people are still queuing up to get to the cinema to watch the comic book adventure.

The film is the only movie in 2021 to hit the $1 billion mark – and it has made history for Sony by becoming the company’s domestic top grossing film smashing a 2017 record set by Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle that earned $404.5 million.
